Purification & Wudu

Taharah — Hanafi Fiqh

Hanafi school — for educational purposes

What is Taharah?

Taharah means purification — the removal of ritual impurity (najasah) and the attainment of ritual purity (tahara). It is the foundation of prayer. Without ritual purity, prayer is not accepted. The Quran states: "Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)

There are two types of ritual impurity: hadath al-awsat (minor impurity, removed by wudu) and hadath al-akbar (major impurity, removed by ghusl). Additionally, physical impurity (najasah) on the body or clothes must be removed before prayer.

The Obligation of Wudu

The Fard (Obligatory) Acts of Wudu (Hanafi)

According to the Hanafi school, wudu has four fard (obligatory) acts derived directly from the Qur'an:

  1. Washing the face — from hairline to chin, ear to ear, including the mouth and nose
  2. Washing both arms — from fingertips to and including the elbows
  3. Wiping part of the head — at minimum, one quarter of the head
  4. Washing both feet — from toes to and including the ankles

Important Sunnahs and Adab

While not fard, these are strongly recommended for a complete and rewarded wudu:

  • Making intention (niyyah) in the heart — a conscious decision to perform wudu for the sake of Allah
  • Observing the proper sequence (tartib) — performing the fard acts in the order mentioned
  • Washing the hands before beginning, using the right hand first
  • Rinsing the mouth three times, sniffing water into the nose three times
  • Wiping the entire head (not just one quarter), and wiping the ears
  • Using the right hand over the left, and washing each part three times

These sunnah and adab actions are encouraged but omitting them does not invalidate the wudu. The fard acts above are what must be completed for ritual purity.

Step-by-Step Wudu

1

Make intention (niyyah)

In your heart, intend to perform wudu for the sake of Allah. No spoken intention is required.

2

Say "Bismillah"

Begin with the name of Allah.

3

Wash hands to wrists

Wash both hands three times, including between the fingers, up to and including the wrists. Begin with the right hand.

4

Rinse mouth and nose

Rinse the mouth three times. Take water into the nose three times and blow it out gently.

5

Wash the face

Wash the entire face — from the hairline at the top, to the chin at the bottom, and from ear to ear. Include the ears. Three times is sunnah.

6

Wash arms to elbows

Wash the right arm from fingertips to and including the elbow, then the left arm the same way. Include between the fingers. Three times is sunnah.

7

Wipe the head

Wet your hands and wipe across the front of the head at minimum once. It is sunnah to wipe the entire head and also the ears (inside and outside).

8

Wipe inside of ears

Using wet index fingers, wipe the inside of both ears. Using wet thumbs, wipe the outside of both ears.

9

Wash feet to ankles

Wash both feet — right foot first — from the toes to and including the ankles. Include between the toes. Three times is sunnah.

What Invalidates Wudu?

The following actions invalidate (break) wudu and require it to be performed again before prayer:

Anything exiting from the front or back passage (urine, stool, wind, blood, etc.)
Deep sleep — sleeping lying down or in a way that causes loss of awareness
Loss of consciousness (fainting, intoxication, etc.)
Intentional vomiting (if a mouthful) — nausea alone does not break wudu

Note: Touching the opposite gender without desire, bleeding (small cuts), and coughing do not invalidate wudu in the Hanafi school.

Tayammum — When Water is Unavailable

When water is unavailable, or a person is sick and cannot use water, Tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) becomes necessary. This is a concession from Allah.

The conditions for Tayammum: water is genuinely unavailable (not merely inconvenient), or the person has an illness that would worsen with water.

Method: Strike both palms once on clean earth, dust, or a pure stone wall, then wipe the face with both palms, then strike again and wipe both hands up to the wrists.
